The Easter or Paschal Triduum concludes the liturgical season of Lent and introduces us to the joy of the Easter season. This retreat will begin on Wednesday evening to allow participants to settle in and be familiar with the Centre before the Mass of the Lord's Supper on the evening of Holy Thursday, continuing through the Good Friday service and Holy Saturday, and will conclude with Mass on Easter Sunday morning.

    Peter Edmonds SJ

‘These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name’ (John 20:31).

John’s Gospel is distinguished from the others in several respects:

    • by the depth of its portrait of Christ who was with the Father in glory ‘before the world was made’ (17:5) and whose mission in this world is the revelation of the Father;
    • through its gallery of memorable characters, some otherwise unknown to us like Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, the man born blind and others, depicted on a far deeper level than elsewhere, like the apostle Thomas, Mary Magdalen, Pontius Pilate;
    • through its invitation to its readers to see the Gospel story against the background of ultimate human realities such as light and life, bread and water, and to live it out in this world through the Spirit ‘which those who believed in him were to receive’ (7:39)

Traditionally a catechesis based on this gospel prepared new Christians for baptism at Easter; it is also a powerful means for Christian prayer as we approach the mysteries of the Easter season.

The handouts offered can accompany the retreatant through the year that follows the retreat experience

Peter Edmonds SJ spent many years in Zimbabwe as professor of New Testament in the Regional Seminary and was National Director for the Biblical Apostolate in that country. He then taught at Hekima College, the Jesuit School of Theology in Nairobi, Kenya, and in recent times has been a member of the Theology Faculty of Oxford University. He has a special interest in retreat giving, offering material for prayer on particular Gospels.

This retreat will encourage the participants to grow in their understanding of themselves through growing in their understanding and experience of God in whose image we are all created.  The retreat will lead us along this journey using as its inspiration the profound spiritual experiences of two great saints, Francis of Assisi and his spiritual companion, Clare of Assisi.  Drawing on the renowned spiritual work of one of Francis' early followers, St  Bonaventure, we will reflect on what  Bonaventure terms the Three Books of Revelation, the Book of the Scriptures, the Book of the World and the Book of the Self.  Relating our reflections to insights of contemporary spirituality, we may begin to discern more clearly the depths of insight to be found in St Bonaventure's claim, "I know myself better in God than in my very self".

Fr Paul Rout OFM is a priest of the Australasian Province of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor.  He lectures in Franciscan Spirituality and Philosophy of Religion at Heythorp College, University of London, and at the Yarra Theological Union, Melbourne, Australia.  He is also engaged in pastoral parish ministry in the Catholic parish of Heston in London and gives occasional Retreats and Days of Prayer to Religious and Parish groups in various parts of the country.

This Retreat will be transferred to the 2018 Programme.

Earth, air, fire and water all appear in Biblical tradition. The writers use them in different ways to explore the experiences and encounters of ‘being’ and ‘Being’: the deep, dark womb-like places from which life comes over and over again and to which it returns; the breath of God which inspires and scares in equal measure; the flame-dancing Spirit that comforts, challenges and changes those who feel the heat; the waters of restoration which sometimes threaten to overwhelm yet often produce riches from the depths. Some of these energies we identify with more than others, or connect with at different times.

Through silence, image, word, music and art, this retreat offers the opportunity to work imaginatively with these four elements, to play with them and pray through them, and to further the inner conversation faith opens up in our hearts and minds. Each talk begins with a poem by R. S. Thomas to help focus attention more deeply on the unfolding themes. The opportunity to explore through, painting and clay-sculpting will be present throughout the retreat in the art room for those who want to explore beyond words.

This preached retreat is an extended reflection on the three "R's" of our inner life:

    • Resting
    • Remembering
    • Returning

Fr. Charles Cross C.P. a Passionist from Co. Down sees this retreat as an opportunity to come to an awareness of some of the essential ingredients of being a disciple of Jesus.

"For thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.  Your salvation lay in conversion and tranquillity, your strength, in complete trust..." (Isaiah 30:15)

    Living Prayer

    Fr Pat Collins, CM

In his classic book entitled Prayer Friedrich Heiler stated, “Religious persons and students of religion agree in testifying that prayer is the centre of religion, the soul of all piety. . .  Without prayer faith remains a theoretical conviction; worship is only an external and formal act; moral action is without spiritual depth; people remain at a distance from God; an abyss yawns between the finite and the Infinite.” In this retreat Fr. Pat Collins, C.M., who is the author of a number of books on prayer  will explore different aspects of the subject such as “Praying as Jesus Prayed,” “The festal shout of Praise and Thanksgiving,” “Intercession in the Spirit,” “Lectio Divina and Contemplation,” “Listening to God,” “Receiving Guidance in Prayer,”  “Prayer and Praxis” and “Praying at all Times.” There will be two talks a day, an optional Bible study, and a homily during the Eucharist. There will also be other optional activities, e.g. watching a movie.

Pat Collins C.M., M.A., STL a  Vincentian, has been a teacher, missioner and lecturer. He   helped to establish the Alpha course in Ireland, is a founder member of the New Springtime Community in Dublin, and is an international speaker. He has written  a number of books on prayer, such as Prayer in Practice (Columba: Dublin, 2000); Preparing to Pray (Dublin: Columba, 2004) and Guided by God: Ordinary and Charismatic Ways of Discovering God’s Will (Luton: New Life, 2015). His latest books   Encountering Jesus: New Evangelisation in Practice;  and Prophecy: Truth for Today, Light for Tomorrow are due to be published in 2017.

God Slipped in "did not our hearts burn within us?"

Often, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we journey through life not fully appreciating how God is with us. This retreat is a reflection of the varieties of religious experience, of the many ways that God can and does come in to our lives in good times and bad.

Fr Derek Laverty is a religious priest belonging tot he Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The most famous member of the Congregation is Saint Damien of Molokai, the leper priest. Fr. Derek, who was ordained in 1991, is a well-known Retreat Director who has been full time involved in leading days, weekends and preached and directed retreats throughout the UK, Ireland and further afield. He has experience of parish ministry, leadership and working in the third world (Mozambique, Africa).

This retreat was advertised as being led by  Fr Anthony Fernandes, SFX. Fr Anthony has been asked by his order to take on a new ministry and is very sad not to be able to lead this retreat.

We are very grateful to Fr Derek Laverty SSCC who has agreed at short notice to lead the retreat, having to reschedule a number of appointments to accommodate us.

St Therese's Little Way to Holiness

Although she lived an obscure and short life, St Therese of Lisieux has had an enormous impact on Catholic spirituality, so much so, that she was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1997. This retreat will explore how an understanding of the psycho-spiritual experiences of her childhood had a big effect on her novel and influential spirituality. A number of themes will be examined such as separation anxiety, Jansenistic perfectionism, Justification by faith, The little Way, her understanding of holiness etc.

Pat Collins C.M., M.A., STL a  Vincentian, has been a teacher, missioner and lecturer. A Retreat Association Quiet Day led by Sr Magdalen Lawler SND

Beginning with the newly commissioned icon of the Woman at the Well, we will explore the value of gazing with inner eyes at the mysteries enshrined in icons. Using ancient mindfulness practices the icons open up to us ways of understanding Christ and his message for today.

Magdalen is a Sister of Notre Dame, living in Bermondsey, SE London. She trained at St Beuno’s and was part of the Ignatian retreat team at Loyola Hall and elsewhere. Since her retirement she has worked in retreats and spiritual direction. She has a special interest in women’s spirituality and in the relationship between spirituality and the visual arts. Her interest in icons was part of her degree dissertation.

Her most recent publications are Christ, Our Morning Star, Love bade me Welcome and Show us the Father all published by Pauline Media UK.

CATHOLIC SPIRITUALITY NETWORK Pre-Advent Retreat Waiting, Watching and Wonderment

Praying the Advent mystery through artwork, poetry, and the rhythms of creation

In this retreat we will use artwork, poetry and the rhythms of creation to explore how God comes afresh into our own waiting, watching and wonderment.

As the autumn fall moves towards winter’s stillness, the season of Advent shifts our gaze to the final days when so much that seemed important will be swept away. But Advent also bids us look forward to birth, beginning, and the budding of a yet hidden spring. We are taken back to the mother’s womb. Life will be renewed in her child of love.

Led by Magdalen Lawler and Christopher Chapman

This retreat is an opportunity for members and the wider Catholic Community to come together to strengthen our links and to reflect and deepen the coming Advent season.  Sunday Eucharist will be celebrated during the retreat at 11:30 on Sunday.

Booking is open now – forms available on the Kairos Centre website

At each CARM (Creative Arts Retreat Movement) retreat there is a leader skilled in each available art, and a leader qualified to act as chaplain. They give their time and skills voluntarily.

CARM is Christian and ecumenical. People of any religion or none are welcome to attend. Worship during retreats is open, inclusive and rooted in Christian traditions.

Half of each retreat day (from 9.30 in the morning to 9.30 at night) is spent in the excitement and challenge of specific creative activities and in worship. These can be times of co-operation, fellowship and shared laughter, or of solitude and reflection - the choice is yours. The other half of each day is for times of silence, for prayer and sleep.

“Be transformed by a spiritual revolution so that you can put on your new self” (Ephesians 4.23):
Spiritual transformation through the gifts of the Spirit.

This retreat will lead us on a journey in which we shall contemplate the transforming power that is granted us when we open our hearts to accept the gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit.  Our guides for this journey will be the great 13th Century Franciscan spiritual writer St Bonaventure and our present Pope, Pope Francis.  The retreat will focus upon each of the seven gifts of the Spirit, exploring their foundations in the Scriptures and their practical applications as found in the reflections of our two spiritual guides.

Fr Paul Rout OFM is a priest of the Australasian Province of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor.  He has a teaching background in Franciscan Spirituality and Philosophy of Religion at Heythrop College, University of London, at the Yarra Theological Union, Melbourne, Australia and in Adult Faith Formation programmes in the Westminster Diocese.  He is also engaged in pastoral parish ministry in the Catholic parish of Heston in London, and gives Retreats and Days of Prayer to Religious and Parish groups in various parts of the country.
